African preacher wins crowd
This year's Katherine Christian Convention was a bit different to most; its keynote speaker was from Uganda!
Rev'd Canon Alfred Olwa, who is currently doing Doctoral studies at Sydney's Moore College, had the crowd enthralled with his blend of enthusiasm for God's Word and his clear preaching.
Alfred, who became better known as 'Papa', spoke five times on the theme 'Chosen and Called' from the book of 1 Peter. The messages emphasised the privilege of being chosen by God and being called into fellowship with Him through the work of the Holy Spirit. The practical implications of these truths were plentiful and gave all delegates something to talk about for years to come.
One indigenous pastor was heard saying to Alfred "Thank you for bringing us this strong teaching". Many queued up after the final session to meet this wonderful man of God who had captured the hearts and minds of the locals with his warmth, courage and godliness.
The weather was not kind this year and many people from remote indigenous communities were unable to attend due to flooded rivers. Nevertheless, a large contingent joined in enthusiastically contributing some of the best performances at the evening celebration time that had been seen in a long time. There was even a reprise of a song learnt from Bp Festo Kivengere in 1959. It was sung in Swahili as a special treat for 'Papa' who is studying Festo's ministry in Australia and worldwide.
Australian singer/songwriter, Steve Grace, arrived by light plane from Caloundra in Queensland after two days in the air! He performed a special concert on the Sunday afternoon to the delight of the crowd and even helped out with the youth programme.
Many visitors came from all over Australia and lent a hand to make KCC run smoothly.
The 'Flying BibleMan' was MC of the event again this year while members of the Bible Society South Australia staff helped with set-up, audio/visual equipment and most importantly, cleaning toilets.
